CoLAB 2024
2nd Year
brief
Sheffield General Cemetery is a much-loved landmark in the heart of the city. Within its serene grounds lies the derelict Anglican Chapel. This project seeks to reimagine the chapel's purpose by transforming it into a community environment that fosters inclusivity and sustainability whilst also addressing the immediate needs of the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust. Through careful consideration of its architectural heritage and the evolving needs of the surrounding community we will provide a space that benefits everyone.

It will include public spaces such as a café with indoor and outdoor seating and a book shop selling information on the history of the cemetery. Not only does this generate income for the trust allowing them to keep the building up and running, italso achieves their aims of sharing the cemetery’s history and landscape. Additionally, there will be a multifunctional room which can be rented out by schools and groups to further educate people.
A main concern for the trust was they needed better facilities for the dedicated volunteers. To achieve this we have prioritised practical needs by adding a staff entrance, breakout space (with kitchen), changing rooms and storage for their equipment. This will enhance the well-being of those who contribute to the cemetery's upkeep.
